What is IUU Fishing? I CCEF

Ranked as the 10th largest fish-producing country in the world, and the 17th most biologically rich country, the Philippines' vast resources provide livelihood and security for over one million Filipinos. Ironically, Filipino fisherfolks are among the poorest of the poor in the country, with at least 300,000 fisherfolk living below minimum wage. Because the Philippines is a coastal country, its people are heavily reliant on the resources provided by our oceans. As the population continues to demand more and more fish, the supply of caught fishes have declined and prices have dramatically increased. The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) reported that 10 out of 13 fishing grounds or about 75% of the country’s fishing sites are overfished largely due to what we call Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated Fishing (IUU). What is IUU Fishing? Let’s start by defining some words 1. Illegal Fishing Illegal fishing refers to types of fishing that violate national and local fisheries laws. Although it is most common to refer to illegal fishing as destructive fishing methods like dynamite fishing, illegal fishing can also pertain to fishing outside designated areas, the use of prohibited fishing gear, and fishing in closed areas and closed seasons. 2. Unreported Fishing refers to fishing activities that are not reported or are misreported to relevant authorities. An example of this is when illegal fishers do not report fish catch or keep undersized fish protected by national law. 3. Unregulated Fishing is when there are no applicable fisheries management measures for fishing activities to sustain a fishing ground. Many times, unregulated fishing can occur when there is poor coastal law enforcement and motivation for the community to protect their fisheries. All over the world IUU fishing threatens ocean ecosystems and takes away at least 70% of the annual income of law-abiding fisherfolk and seafood producers in the Philippines.
