Short reflection: Light Dawning in Galilee: The Call of the First Disciples This liturgical text, recounts the beginning of Jesus' public ministry in Galilee following the imprisonment of John the Baptist. By settling in Capernaum, Jesus fulfills ancient prophetic scriptures regarding a great light rising to guide those living in spiritual darkness. The narrative describes the urgent call of the first disciples—Peter, Andrew, James, and John—who abandoned their fishing livelihoods to follow him immediately. Jesus presents himself as a transformative light breaking through spiritual darkness to announce that the kingdom of heaven is near. The narrative highlights his authority to call followers, as seen in the immediate and total commitment of the first disciples who leave their livelihoods to become "fishers of men." As his mission expands, Jesus travels throughout the region proclaiming the kingdom of heaven while performing acts of physical and spiritual healing. Long Reflection: Catholic Reflections – A Great Light Has Dawned Date: Sunday 25 January 2026 Liturgical: 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time (Sunday of the Word of God) Outline: • Opening prayer • Gospel reading (paraphrased for easy listening) • Reflection on the Word of God, repentance, and the call to follow • Key points for discipleship • Concluding prayer Gospel – Matthew 4:12–23 (paraphrased): When Jesus heard that John the Baptist had been arrested, He withdrew into Galilee. He left Nazareth and settled in Capernaum by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali. This fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah: the people living in darkness would see a great light, and a new dawn would rise over those in the shadow of death. From that moment, Jesus began His public preaching with a clear message: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” As Jesus walked along the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon—later called Peter—and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea, because they were fishermen. Jesus called them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Immediately, they left their nets and followed Him. A little further on, Jesus saw James and John, the sons of Zebedee, in a boat with their father, mending their nets. Jesus called them too, and without delay they left their boat, their father, and their work, and followed Him. Jesus then travelled throughout Galilee, teaching in synagogues, proclaiming the Good News of the Kingdom, and healing every kind of sickness and suffering among the people. Key Points: 1. God’s Word brings light On this Sunday of the Word of God, we remember: Scripture is not just information—it is God speeing, shining, light into our darkness. 2. Repentance opens the door to the Kingdom “Repent” means turn around and come back to God. The Kingdom is near because Jesus is near. 3. Jesus calls ordinary people Fishermen at work become Apostles on mission. God uses simple lives to do great things. 4. Immediate obedience changes everything The disciples leave their nets right away. Faith means trusting Jesus enough to move when He calls. 5. The Gospel is word and healing Jesus teaches and He heals. His Word restores minds and hearts, and His mercy restores broken lives. Concluding Prayer: Lord Jesus, You are the Light that dawns in our darkness and the Word made flesh who calls us to follow. Give us ears to hear Your voice in Scripture, and hearts ready to repent and believe. Free us from anything that holds us back— our “nets” of sin, fear, comfort, and distraction. Make us true disciples, ready to follow You immediately, and to become “fishers of men” Amen.
