🚗 "The Big Shift" was a gradual transition from horse-drawn transportation to cars in Erie between 1890 and 1940. 🚲 Bicycles played a significant role in getting people off horses, especially for those with limited financial resources. 🏎️ Jackson Koehler owned the first car in Erie, a Winton, delivered in 1898. 🛣️ The lack of infrastructure made owning a car in the early days of Erie difficult. 🏎️ The Roth brothers added a Cadillac dealership to their bicycle business, becoming the oldest continuously operating Cadillac dealer in the world. 🚗 Automobile purchases increased rapidly, and driving to work involved navigating challenging conditions. 🏎️ In 1906, several car enthusiasts organised an automobile race from Erie to North East, testing the differences between one and two lung engines.
