Rambles with Robin and Ruby: Aklavik and Grizzly Bears in the Mackenzie River Delta, Northwest Territories, June 19, 2019. Episode: 19E25 Robin is a 2015 T@B travel trailer. Ruby is a 2019 Subaru Outback. In this episode of Rambles with Robin and Ruby, I describe a side trip across the Mackenzie River delta to the Hamlet of Aklavik, Northwest territories, Canada. Aklavik sits on the west side of the Mackenzie River delta, about 185 km (115 mi) north of the Arctic Circle and about 63 km (40 mi) west-southwest of Inuvik. To the west of Aklavik are the Richardson Mountains and to the east is the Mackenzie River delta. There were four reasons why we visited Aklavik: 1: Not many tourists visit Aklavik. It is off the beaten track and that alone is a good reason to visit; 2: Aklavik is home of the barren-land grizzly bear, so there is always a chance to see grizzly bear; 3: We wanted to see first hand what the Mackenzie River delta looked like; and 4: We wanted to see what Aklavik looked like. Join us as we visit Aklavik, cross the Mackenzie River delta by boat, see melting soil ice, and see two barren-land grizzly bears in the delta. Geological and other natural curiosities include: a) Mackenzie River; b) Mackenzie River delta; c) seasonal soil ice; d) discontinuous permafrost; and e) river erosion. Also mentioned are the following communities and geographic sites: a) Inuvik; b) Aklavik; c) Point Separation; d) Northwest Territories; and e) Mackenzie River delta. Andy Fyon
