I was trying to do this mountain last October, but we ended at Whirlwind Peak due to too much fresh snow. Recently it has been very smoky in Greater Vancouver. I checked the air quality index in Whistler and found it was supposed to be good till 6pm on Saturday September 12. We got to Whistler Village parking lots at 5am. I looked up and saw the moon with shining stars in the sky. We started hiking from the parking lot #4 at 5:15am at a moderate pace. 3.5 hours later we arrived at Russet Lake, 15 kilometers away from where we parked. The last 5ish kilometers to the peak took us 4 hours! We refilled our water bottles twice before getting to the bottom of the glacier. After a lengthy break, we started climbing on the left side of the glacier till a huge moat, which I think is at least 15 meters high. We turned right and continued crossing the glacier in the direction of Whirlwind Peak, where we dropped to the ridge to Overlord. We tried to do a short cut by side hilling. But it is so steep and slippery that we had to climb back to the ridge 40 minutes later. There are no big exposures other than elevation loss along the ridge to Overlord. However; you need to be careful at several places; especially when going down. If you fall there, you don’t know where you will end. We stood on the peak 7.5 hours after we left our car. It was hazy but we were able to see mountains around. We spent an hour enjoying the stunning views. My friend, Zarko, even had a nap at the peak. On the way back, we took the glacier at the middle of the ridge between Overlord and Whirlwind. This saved us a lot of time and elevation. There are crevasses but they are obvious, and we just walked away from them. We felt very comfortable without being roped up. Russet Lake area started to be smoky at 2pm. C2C 13 hours 20 minutes. Totally 41 kilometers return with 2221 meters of elevation gain as per my GPS.
