In this video, I explain what null auxiliaries are and why they matter in syntax. We look at how something can occupy the T position in a sentence without being pronounced, and I show how we can still tell it's there based on how the sentence behaves. I go through four pieces of evidence to show that even when auxiliaries like could or do aren’t visible, they still affect things like verb form, case assignment, and word order. I also talk about affix hopping and how tense features move to the verb when there’s no overt auxiliary. Later, we look at infinitival clauses and see how the same logic applies with the infinitive marker to. Overall, the video walks through the idea that all finite and infinitival clauses have a T head. Sometimes it's visible, sometimes it's not, but it's always doing something. #syntax #linguistics #nullauxiliaries #englishgrammar #generativegrammar #minimalistprogram #affixhopping #caseassignment #tpstructure #treegrammar #transformationalgrammar #syntaxlesson #invisiblegrammar #languageanalysis #linguisticsstudent #linguisticstheory #englishsyntax #grammarnerd #nullt #tprojection #infinitivalclauses #auxiliaryverbs #covertgrammar #linguisticscommunity #academiclinguistics #linguisticsvideo #syntaxexplained #universitylinguistics #grammarstructure #syntaxstructure
