On 16 October 1944, the Red Army launched its offensive against East Prussia. The German Fourth Army, severely weakened by the disaster of Army Group Centre in the summer, was forced to retreat. By 18 October, Soviet troops had crossed the German frontier, capturing the first border settlements. Gumbinnen, the main border city in East Prussia, suffered severe damage but managed to avoid falling into Soviet hands. The same could not be said of Nemmersdorf, a small village to the southwest, which was occupied in the early hours of 21 October by the 2nd Battalion of the 25th Guards Tank Brigade of the Soviet 11th Army.
