It was time to rejoin my fellow hobbyists and be sociable again. After departing South Fork, I headed east to meet up with the rest of the group in Tipton. While Pittsburgh Line milepost 225 lacks the drama of the battle with gravity that occurs further west, it makes up for it with bucolic surroundings, sweeping curves, a classic Pennsy position light signal bridge (for the time being), and one wicked echo chamber for the horns of the passing trains. We arrived at Tipton later than past visits, but the trains did not disappoint. At 10:53, no time to talk, must dash...P42 194 gave a half-hearted salute as it rushed past with a late-running eastbound Pennsylvanian. An hour later (okay, maybe they disappointed just a smidge), SD70ACe 1049 produced a more vivid demonstration of the echo at Tipton as it led sister unit 1029 and empty oil train 67Z towards the Allegheny barrier. At 12:24, the quiet time was over as the dispatcher cleared a trio of eastbounds out of Altoona, starting with doublestack hotshot 24W led by ES44DC 7523, C40-9 8834, and C44-9W 9317. The consist was somewhat deceptive, as a good portion of it was comprised of empty well cars returning to Eastern ports for their next loads. Twenty minutes later, 20W showed off a fuller consist as it swept through the curve behind ES44DC 7618 and C44-9W 9241. The eastbound trio was completed a little past 1 when 36A exited the passing siding behind SD60I 6739 and C40-8 8717. Just nine minutes after the passage of 36A, SD70ACe 1035 and ES44AC 8078 led empty oil train 67W westward. The grapevine had alerted us to a noteworthy lashup headed our way, so we lingered a little bit longer before heading for lunch and a new location. At 1:26, 10G passed in review to a fanfare from the horn of C40-8W 8379. The ex-Conrail veteran was assisted in its freight-hauling duties by SD75M 2805 (ex-Santa Fe) and Canadian Pacific SD60 6251 (ex-Soo), the latter serving as an emphatic red punctuation mark on our morning. #train #trainspotting #railfanning #railroad #pennsylvania #travel
