A 29-year-old man from Zambia was left bilaterally blind due to Stevens-Johnson syndrome, a rare but serious drug-induced condition. The patient arrived at Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad, with their eyes closed and could not open them to carry out basic activities. Dr. Rajesh Fogla, Ophthalmologist of Apollo Hospitals, devised a two-staged surgical strategy for the treatment of this patient. In the first stage, the ocular surface of the right eye was reconstructed by using mucosal tissue obtained from the patient's lower lip. This approach not only restored the ocular surface damage but also enhanced the ability for the ocular surface to be re-treated in the future. The second stage was the implantation of a Boston Type 2 keratoprosthesis, a plastic eye, under the mucosal graft. The procedure achieved 85 - 90% visual recovery in the right eye! The patient can now read, write on the phone, and move independently. The patient had an untreated left eye and may ultimately need similar surgery if he chooses to continue with this sort of surgical reconstruction. His case demonstrates that complicated ocular reconstruction can reverse blindness and improve quality of life when treated by an experienced team, using the latest techniques.
