1. The Beginning: Climbing the 120 Steps Our journey starts at the East Pass (東隘口). We will hike up the Bai-Er-Kan Trail (百二崁步道). The name "Bai-Er" means 120 in Taiwanese, representing the 120 stone steps that lead us into this sacred hill. As you climb, enjoy the atmospheric stairs (具有氛圍感的階梯) surrounded by ancient trees. 2. Faith and Rituals: Huiji Temple At the top, we reach Huiji Temple (惠濟宮), a spiritual hub for over 270 years. Inside, look for the Wenchang Brush (文昌筆), where students pray for academic success. You will also see traditional ritual instruments (法器) like the wooden fish (木魚) and the large sounding bowl (大磬), used to maintain rhythm during chanting. Don't miss the beautifully carved Treasure Bell and Drum Stand (寶鐘鼓架). 3. Whispers of History: Ruins and Gates Walking along the trail, you might feel a lingering mystery—you can really tell that something used to be here (感覺這裡曾經有什麼). Indeed, we will pass the ruins of the old Shinto shrine (神社遺址) and the North Gate Pass (北隘門). The city wall ruins (城牆遺址) tell stories of early settlers defending their homes. We will also pay respects at the Da-Mu-Gong Ossuary (大墓公同歸所), a memorial for those who lost their lives in past conflicts. 4. Nature’s Wonders: Rocks and Wildlife Keep your eyes peeled! Zhishanyan is famous for its unique geology, like the Snake and Frog Rock (蛇蛙石). If we are lucky, we might have a chance encounter with a Malayan Night Heron (巧遇黑冠麻鷺), a bird famous for standing perfectly still. And of course, there are plenty of squirrels in the park (園區內很多松鼠) scurrying about! 5. The Grand Finale: City Views Before we head down, take a moment to enjoy the breathtaking city view to the east (東邊的城市景色). From here, you can see the bustling Shilin district contrasting with the peaceful greenery of this hill. 6. Conclusion We’ll be heading back the same way (原路返回) now. I hope you enjoyed this blend of history, culture, and nature. Thanks for watching! (感謝收看!) #taiwan #taipei #travel #hiking
