Philadelphia’s Mayor Michael Nutter confirmed this week he plans to sign into law a bill to decriminalize possession of small amounts of weed. Those cited will still be summonsed to appear before a Municipal Court judge, but they will not end up with a criminal record. Rather than being jailed, tokers will receive a $25 fine for possession and a $100 fine for smoking in public. According to City Councilman Jim Kenney, the move could save the Philadelphia Police Department about $4 million per year, along with keeping roughly 4,000 people a year out of jail. Things are also looking up in the Sunshine State. Well, maybe… According to a recent Gravis Marketing poll, 64% of Floridians support legalizing medical marijuana. Voters go to the polls on November 4 to decide on Amendment 2, which requires a super majority of 60% in favor of pot to amend the state constitution. Sure, 64% support sounds great until you realize that there’s a 4% margin of error – which means support could actually be at only 60%. That’s worrying because, as Bill Maher recently pointed out, only nutcases tend to vote in midterms. And, in Florida, most of the nutcases are on the wrong side of this issue. Finally, ladies can’t handle their weed - at least according to the latest research from the U.S. Government. Apparently, the higher the estrogen level the more chance of becoming anxious, panicky and paranoid while getting high. Well, that’s the presumption by the folks in the white lab coats at Washington State University. In a study funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse and published in the journal “Drug and Alcohol Dependence,” researchers claim that women are 30% more likely than men to have their pain relieved by marijuana – which has led the feds to suggest that women are also more susceptible to the possible negative side effects of weed. “Marijuana is very different than it was 40 years ago,” Lead researcher Rebecca Craft said in a press release. "We're more likely to see negative side effects today like anxiety, confusion, panic attacks, hallucinations or extreme paranoia … and women are at higher risk," she said. What do you think?
