FCPX Maps - Complete Map Creation Lesson Welcome to the FCPX Maps tutorial. In this tutorial we are going over: how to set up a scene, using camera controls in a 3D scene, setting path points in a 2D scene, and adding images to drop zones. Move to one of these timecodes to find the section you want to watch. Part 1: Setting up Maps (00::18:00) Part 2: 3D Scene Camera Controls (02:14:01) Part 3: Setting Path Points (03:33:15) Part 4: Adding Media (04:07:02) FCPX Maps - Setting Up a Scene After FCPX Maps has been successfully installed you will find it in the Generators tab inside of Final Cut Pro X. FCPX Maps includes 2 path types: 2D and 3D In this example we are going to be using a 3D path with 1 drop zone. Drag the preset into the Final Cut Pro X timeline to begin. To avoid any problems down the line, we are going to adjust the duration of the generator now by moving the end point of the generator before generating a map. Once the duration has been set you will find FCPX Maps’ controls in the Inspector window. FCPX Maps is defaulted with the Instructions turned on. Turn off the instructions for now. Check the instructions box back on whenever you need to reference them. Now we are going to generate a map. Add the start location into the Location One box and the end location into the Location Two box. Before generating a map we need to make any other adjustment to parameters in the Map Controls section. The Map Style drop-down window contains 6 style options. In this example we are going to use the Light map style. The Map Sharpness drop-down includes 3 options. Sharp is the clearest option and Blurry creates a softening effect. We are going to use Normal. The Zoom Level controls how close to street level a map will be. Higher zoom levels are for displaying streets and short distances while lower zoom levels are perfect for showing distant travel between countries. Increasing the Extend Map parameter will add an outer layer of tiles to maps. Use this if the map is zoomed out and doesn’t include enough tiles to fill the screen. The Duration (Frames) slider is the exact number of frames it takes for the animation to get from point A to point B. The less frames the faster the animation. The map is now ready to generate. Click on the Generate Map button and wait for the tiles to download. If you need to make changes to the Map Controls section after generating a map, click on the Delete Tile Cache before making any edits and regenerating the map. FCPX Maps - Using Camera Controls in a 3D Scene FCPX Maps is defaulted to link to the animated path. Uncheck this box if you want to control the camera manually. If you want the camera to sit in place at a specific location you can uncheck the Link to Path box and adjust the Manual Cam Position controls. Now we have an animated path with a set camera position. Let’s turn the camera link back on. Next we’ll adjust the Offset Linked Position Controls to change the framing of the camera when the link is set to the path. Then, alter the angle of the map using the Rotation controls. We can also control the Angle of View and add Depth of Field. We can adjust the Depth Multiplier to control how much the camera moves in Z space during the apex of the animation. We can change the arc of the path by navigating to the Path Controls section and adjusting the Apex slider. FCPX Maps - Setting Path Points in a 2D Scene When using a 2D path users can also create new points on the path. We can get a better frame of view by temporarily turning off the path link and adjusting the cam position controls. To set a new point, hold the Shift Key and click on the path. To move the point, hold the Shift Key, click on the point and drag it to a new position. Use the Clear Path button located under Point Controls to remove points. FCPX Maps - Adding Images to the Scene In both the 2D and 3D scenes, there is a Drop Zone that follows the path. For this example, we are going to use an image with a transparent background as a logo. Import the image into Final Cut or drag it into the timeline. Next, click on the Drop Zone button and then click on the image in the timeline. Hit the Apply button that pops up to add it to the drop zone. If the scene is tilted you can hit the Face Camera checkbox to make sure the drop zone is always facing the camera. Media Scale adjusts the image inside of a box while Overall Scale adjusts the size of the box. Rotation, opacity and anchor points can also be tweaked. 3D Path scenes also include drop zones. You can choose a preset with 1, 2 or 3 drop zone and text layers. All drop zones and all text layers can be switched on or off using a checkbox. Position each layer anywhere you want on the map.
