(2 Apr 1999) English/Nat VOICED BY - IAN THOMAS Serb troops have led more than two-thousand Kosovars along a mined mountain route to the Albanian border - to a place so remote that trucks are unable to bring in food or ferry out the thousands of refugees who have started coming over the mountain. In a 24 hour period, aid workers counted 2-thousand-500 refugees coming over the border at Qafe e Prushit, more than two hours south of the main border crossing at Morini. Elsewhere on the Albanian border with Kosovo refugees cross to safety in whatever vehicle they can lay their hands on. 00-00 Soldiers from the Yugoslavian army man their positions in the mountains of Kosovo. They wander casually only a few hundred of yards from the border with Albania. From here they can see and hear the NATO bombardment, but as yet they are untouched by it. 00-16 UPSOUND cruise missile A NATO cruise missile roars overhead, seeking out its target. 00-24 Nearby, Serbian soldiers herd a group of exhausted refugees along a mountain path. Witnesses say the soldiers' uniforms and demeanor suggest they are members of an elite force, possibly even connected to the notorious Arkan. Albanian border police claim they saw this area being mined just a week ago. Whether the soldiers are there to make sure the refugees avoid the mines, or whether they just want to make sure they leave their homeland, is unclear. The expulsions are done with cold efficiency. Once over the border, the refugees are on their own. This isolated area of desolate border country has become a new front in the ongoing exodus from Kosovo. 01-03 SOUNDBITE: (English) "We have been here for 24 hours and some two and a half thousand people have crossed - they are all crossing on foot because this is not a vehicle crossing and they are coming mainly from the town of Jacova - it's about ten kilometres away but it's an uphill climb all the way and by the time they get here they are exhausted." SUPERCAPTION: John Campbell, UNHCR field officer 01-21 The exhausted refugees, including many children and elderly, struggle down a muddy and slippery path towards the nearest village nine, cold miles away. 01-31 At one of the busier border checkpoints the tide of weary ethnic Albanians continues to flow. 01-37 For some the relief can be clearly seen on their faces. 01-41 At least 350 cars, trucks and tractors were packed with people waiting to cross the Albanian border in Morini. 01-47 Most of the people at the checkpoint were elderly women and men accompanied by young children. As refugees continue to stream through the borders, it's probable that the upheaval will alter forever the ethnic makeup of Yugoslavia's Kosovo province. 02-03 VISION ENDS Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork Twitter: / ap_archive Facebook: / aparchives Instagram: / apnews You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
