Plant of the Day: Deciduous Holly (Ilex decidua)

The Possumhaw (Ilex decidua) is a native shrub/tree to the Southeastern United States. This species unlike other hollies, drop its leaves in the fall. Growing to up to 30 feet in height it makes for a great native plant to add to your landscape. In the fall when the frost hits and the berries freeze they become palatable to birds. These berries will pop out throughout the winter giving a showy interest year round. It will attract birds with its seed making it a great wildlife species. This tree enjoys wet areas like ditches, low spots, and pond edges so keep that in mind while planting.
