Modern scholars refer to the alliance between Julius Caesar, Pompey the Great, and Marcus Licinius Crassus as the "First Triumvirate". Though the term is anachronistic and its usage is debated, the power and influence of the three men is not in dispute. Bound by mutual ambition these three men reshaped Roman politics, concentrating power in their hands and undermining their opponents in the old aristocracy. Their efforts generally met with success - but despite their place atop Roman politics, all three members would meet violent deaths—each marking a critical step in the collapse of the Roman Republic and the rise of the roman Empire. This documentary examines how the Triumvirate rose from political necessity and fell through rivalry, betrayal, and ambition. Drawing on the works of Plutarch, Appian, and Cassius Dio, as well as modern historians, it explores how the deaths of Crassus at Carrhae, Pompey at Pharsalus, and Caesar on the Ides of March were not isolated tragedies—but part of a single historical process: the disintegration of republican traditions in the growing power concentration of power in fewer and fewer hands. By tracing the political crisis that followed their downfall, the video reveals how the Triumvirate’s failure paved the way for Augustus and the imperial system that replaced the Republic. Through this lens, the downfall of these men can be read as more than a sequence of assassinations and defeats but instead offers a portrait of a roman world riven by conflict and the inevitable results of a state ruled by men rather than laws. 00:00 - When Prophecy Fails 03:56 - The Death of Crassus 19:50 - The Death of Pompey 34:38 - The Death of Caesar 54:23 - Look on my Works, Ye Mighty Ancient Sources: On Divination, Phillipicae - Cicero Civil Wars - Julius Caesar Life of Julius Caesar - Suetonius Pharsalia - Lucan Histories - Tacitus Roman History - Cassius Dio The Life of Crassus, The Life of Pompey, The Life of Caesar - Plutarch The Civil Wars - Appian Modern Sources: Julius Caesar and the Roman People - Robert Morstein-Marx The Last Generation of the Roman Republic - Erich S.
