#health #medicine #safety This is a video by Catholic Charities about medicine safety. Today we are going to talk about medication safety for you and your family. We all get sick sometimes and we take medicine to help us feel better. Or, some of us have medical conditions that we take medicine for every day. It’s important that we know how to read medicine bottles so that we take the right amount. Making a mistake with medicine can cause serious injuries. In this video, we’ll go over the important guidelines for medication safety. Here are some words we are going to learn in this video. Say the following words in both English and your language: -prescription (RX) -over the counter -pharmacist -dosage Prescription Medicines A prescription is medicine that a doctor tells you to take. A nurse will give you prescription medicine in the hospital and you must pick it up from the pharmacy to take it at home. Always make sure the nurse asks your name and date of birth before you take medicine in the hospital. Only take medication that is prescribed to you by your doctor; never take medication that was prescribed for another person. Do not share your prescribed medicine with anyone else, even a family member. Keep a list of all the medications you take, not just the prescribed ones. For example, vitamins, supplements, and over-the-counter medications like Tylenol. Make sure your doctors know about all the medications you take and carry them with you to your hospital visits. If you stop taking medicine, take it off your list. Tell your doctor if you have any allergies. Label Instructions Prescribed medications will always have a label on the bottle. The label will include: Your Name Instructions on how to take the medication, including the amount and what times The total quantity of pills or liquid as well as the dosage The name of the doctor who prescribed you the medication Label Instructions It is important to take the correct amount, not more or less. Turn on the lights so that you can read the label properly, or ask someone you trust to read your prescription. If you have any questions about your prescription, always call the doctor's office. Talk to your pharmacist if the medication given to you does not look like what you usually take. Always ask questions if something worries you. Children Safety Children are curious and like to put things in their mouths, including medicine. As adults, we have to store medicine where our children can’t get it. Children can get very sick if they take medicine they shouldn’t have. Teach children that only trusted adults can give them medication. The caps on medication will have a built-in lock, but make sure to secure the cap tightly for it to lock. Using the right tools is important. Never give children medication out of a spoon. Your pharmacy should provide you with a syringe for liquid medication, as well as directions on how much to give. Keep medication out of reach of children by storing it somewhere safe, like a cabinet that's high where they cannot see it. ___________________________________________________________________________ Thank you to our sources who provided information for this video and to our interpreter today.
