(1 Jun 1996) Eng/Spanish/Nat Surgeons at a California clinic are preparing to undertake a hazardous operation to separate two baby boys joined from their lower chest to navel. The babies' livers are joined but tests have shown their other organs are independent and doctors say they have a good chance of surviving. Hever Aron and Roman Alan were born on May 16 at Scripps Memorial Hospital in Chula Vista, California, to Andrea and Roman Moreno of Tijuana, Mexico. As of Friday, the boys were feeding independently from bottles. But doctors want them to reach their birth weight of 12 pounds, 6 ounces (6 kilos) before they operate. At present they weigh just under 12 pounds (5.5 kilos) SOUNDBITE: (English) They are fortunately healthy enough that we can wait and do the surgery electively which improves the outcome for conjoined twins. If you have to do it emergently because of other complications then it's a greater risk. SUPER CAPTION: Neil Finer, chief pediatrician University of California, San Diego Medical Center On January 12, twin sisters joined at the chest and belly were born in a clinic in Tijuana, Mexico. Sarah and Sarahi Morales were later moved to Children's Hospital in San Diego, but Sarahi died shortly after separation surgery. Doctors say the boys have a better chance of survival. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) In this case it's different because the two boys are healthy and they're only joined by a portion of liver and skin and I believe the prognosis is much better than in the previous case. SUPER CAPTION: Dr Chong King, U-C San Diego Medical Center A plan is being worked out to pay for the Moreno babies' care because the family has no health insurance. The parents plan to seek private donations, but any balance will be absorbed by the publicly funded hospital.
