WHY IS JUSTICE IMPORTANT FOR SUSTAINABLE PEACE AND DEVELOPMENT? AFRICAN PERSPECTIVES Access to justice is an essential part of achieving both peace and sustainable development. When it comes to justice in Africa, and the linkages between peace and justice, who better to describe the realities of their own and international justice systems than African Chief Justices themselves. In this #HagueTalks, Lady Justice Sophia Akuffo, Chief Justice of Ghana and Lady Justice Irene Mambilina, Chief Justice of Zambia, will explain what justice means to them. They will share their ideas and insights about the importance of justice for sustainable peace and development, as well as what role Africa and Africans will play in the dynamics of peace and justice. The Justices will also share personal experiences as female Justices in this challenging environment and talk about how to tackle the challenge of improving access to justice. ABOUT THE INTERVIEWEE Lady Justice Irene Mambilina brings her experience as the Chief Justice of Zambia along with her work chairing Zambia’s Electoral Commission in both parliamentary and presidential polls. Across the continent she has taken part in election observation missions and led a mission monitoring Liberia’s presidential election.
