The seventeenth-century chorale tune 'Valet will ich dir geben' is associated in the English-speaking world with Palm Sunday, where it is traditionally sung to the processional text, 'All glory, laud and honour'. In its native Germany, however, the tune has no association with Palm Sunday. The original German text was written by Valerius Herberger during a 1613 plague. In the text, Herberger expressive his frustration and despair with the world and his desire to be taken away to heaven - so still perfectly apt this Palm Sunday. Here are two preludes by J.S. Bach on that chorale, both with the original melody thundering in the bass. The first piece, BWV 736, is a feast of triplets in D major. The second, BWV 735, is a more stately piece in B flat major.
