13'-6" x 34 lbs Stapleless Wood Strip Solo Canoe and Canoe Kits The hull shape is based on Henry Rushton's, 1880 Adirondack "Nessmuk" model, now more commonly known as the "Wee Lassie". Rushton built the original 10'-6" x 18 lbs. canoe for George Washington Sears, for him to use on a 550 mile solo trek through the Adirondack Mountain Fulton chain. The canoe is designed for use with a double bladed paddle and has excellent initial stability and will actually ship water over the gunwales without tipping. The hull design includes very fine champagne glass shaped bow and stern, which enables the canoe to track extraordinarily well even in cross winds. The combination of the steam bent ash ribs and the fiberglass clad 3/16" thick wood strips creates at hull so strong that the canoe can be paddled prior to the installation of gunwales or thwarts. The last photo shows a Nessmuk 10.5 being paddled without gunnales or a thwart. The wood decks are fabricated from highly figured wood carefully sawn out of the forks of large intersecting tree branches. The forks are hand sawn into 1" thick slabs parallel to the fork "y" and then allowed to air-dry for a year or more. The seasoned pieces are selected for the best looking grain, the bow and stern decks are made by splitting the 1" thick piece of wood and sequence matching the figured grain during installation, providing a totally one of a kind design detail for each canoe. The entire canoe has a final finish of 5 coats of gloss marine varnish, with each layer detail sanded between coats. The boat is offered for $2,695 or the best offer. This canoe can also be purchased with in Western Red Cedar in lieu of Monterey Pine, and in Kit form (estimated stapleless build time of 100 hrs.) for $1,295. The boat can be shipped to any of the lower 48 states, via common carrier for an additional $350.
