EU Reporter met with the Président of the Parti Des Togolais (14 June) Nathaniel Olympio. Olympio explained that the country has been governed by one family (the Gnassingbe) for over 52 years. There have been regular anti-government protests but those in power are trying to stop demonstrations by not providing permits or making sure that the demonstrations take place far from the city’s centre. A major problem for Togolese democracy is that 85% of people do not hold an identity card and 75% do not hold a birth certificate. The EU suspended relations with Togo between 1993 and 2007, when relations recommenced it was predicated on 22 major reforms including the provision of identity cards. With only 10 months before a general election and 12 years after the commitment was made it is not urgent that the situation has been addressed. Olympio is calling for concerted action and the EU to use its influence to rectify the situation.
