In this conversation, Stefanie Bieber shares her philosophy on "purposeless play" and how freeing music from goal-oriented pressure can restore joy to musical practice. Stefanie describes losing her joy in music during formal flute studies in Frankfurt, Germany, where the focus shifted from playing to proving her worth. After switching to harp, she initially fell into the same patterns until she discovered improvisation while collaborating with a storyteller—realizing that music could flow naturally without predetermined outcomes. Rather than eliminating all purpose, Stefanie advocates for process-oriented practice focused on the present moment rather than future goals. Stefanie teaches through her "Harp Seedlings" program and maintains a supportive Facebook group where musicians share experiments without fear of criticism. Victoria invited Stefanie to create a Harp Seedling advent prompts to encourage experimentation as an alternative to traditional New Year goal-setting.
