The sun begins to set in Amapala (Tiger Island) and I explore the paradisiacal beaches and the commercial district known as el centro. The locals are very friendly, the food in the restaurants is delicious, the beaches are beautiful, the boat to Amapala costs just 25 lempiras ($1), you can buy a whole fried fish for 20 lempiras (80 cents on the dollar) and the sunset is one of the best in Honduras. But something catches my attention about this paradise island: almost no tourists are to be seen and many houses and buildings are abandoned. I'm given the privilege of staying in a vacation home built by a family from Amapala who is wanting to promote tourism, investing in the local economy and betting on the future of the island. Thank you Villas Dubon for hosting us in Amapala. The vacation home has a capacity for 16 people and costs $475 (L. 11,756) per night, equivalent to $29 or L. 735 per person.
