Released in arcades in 1982 by Sega, Star Trek is a 3D shooter for 1 or 2 players. Based on the iconic TV series, the game allows players to take the seat of Captain Kirk aboard the USS Enterprise for a simulated mission into space to destroy Klingon ships. The game's full official title is "Star Trek - Strategic Operations Simulator". The game was unique in that it divided the screen into 3 sections: The upper-left screen shows your remaining Shields, Photon Torpedoes and Warp Energy (which lets you move much faster); The upper-right screen is a radar that shows your ship, enemy ships and Starbases; The lower half is the playfield from a first-person perspective. Besides Torpedoes you also have phasers to attack enemies with. Klingon ships will either attack you or attack Starbases-if a Starbase takes 5 hits it is destroyed. You can fly into a Starbase once per stage for an extra Shield, Torpedo and recover some Warp Energy. A stage is cleared when all enemy ships are destroyed-you earn bonus points for each remaining Starbase, more points if a Starbase wasn't used. When hit by an enemy attack you lose one shield, if you have no shields left they will be lost, followed by losing all Torpedoes on the next hit then all Warp Energy after that. If you have nothing else left and take another hit after all that, the game is over. At the end of each sector you will face a challenging wave where you must survive a wave of mines that will damage you if you are too close. Survive and you proceed to the next sector. The game is endless and ends when your ship is destroyed. Another unique aspect about the game was if 2 people are playing, they alternate playing stages and not taking turns clearing a stage or playing when one player is out. It also featured some digitized speech with voices resembling that of Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock and James Doohan as Mr. Scott aka Scotty. Despite these and the natural appeal to "Trekkies", the fanbase whose loyalty to the franchise is perhaps only rivaled by "Star Wars" fans (and the impressive deluxe sit-down cabinet that resembled a starship cockpit), the game wasn't a huge success in arcades. It was, however, one of the first video games based on a movie or TV show. The game was released for the Atari 2600, Commodore 64 and Atari 400/800 computers in 1983. Fun Fact: You can probably find and play the deluxe sit-down cabinet at the Pinball Hall Of Fame & Museum in Las Vegas, Nevada. I have played it there a few times since 2022.
