Lyndhurst Mansion: Gothic Palace That Survived Three American Empires | 1838–Gilded Age Power Story In 1838, overlooking the quiet waters of the Hudson River in Tarrytown, New York, a bold vision rose from stone and ambition. This was Lyndhurst Mansion — a dramatic Gothic Revival estate that would silently witness the rise and fall of three powerful American eras. Built by former New York City mayor William Paulding Jr., the mansion began as a romantic country retreat — a statement of refined merchant wealth before the Industrial Revolution reshaped the nation. But Lyndhurst would soon become much more than a private residence. Designed by visionary architect Alexander Jackson Davis, the estate became one of the finest examples of Gothic Revival architecture in America. Its pointed arches, towered silhouette, and sweeping river views made it feel like a European castle planted in the young republic. It was elegance mixed with ambition — art mixed with power.
