Influenza viruses are members of the family Orthomyxoviridae. This family represents enveloped viruses the genome of which consists of segmented negative-sense single-strand RNA segments. Influenza viruses are assumed to be transmitted predominantly by aerosol infection, i.e. relatively large droplets (greater than 5 μm) created particularly while talking, coughing, or sneezing, thus entering the mucosae through contact at small distances. Influenza A H3N2 variant viruses (also known as “H3N2v” viruses) with the matrix (M) gene from the 2009 H1N1 pandemic virus were first detected in people in July 2011. Antigenic drift caused by point mutations in the HA and NA molecules leads to antigenic divergence, requiring new vaccines to be made each year.
