BACKGROUND The objective of sanitation is to transform water polluted by human activity (domestic, agricultural, industrial) into water that can be assimilated by the natural environment. There are many sanitation solutions on a collective scale as well as individual solutions called autonomous solutions. All of them rely on bacteriological activity to clean polluted water. In the same way, each system, at the outlet, returns the water to the natural environment by infiltration, spreading field or return to the aquatic environment. PHYTO-PURIFICATION Like all other sanitation systems, phyto-purification is based on the principle of separation of solid and liquid matter as well as the degradation of particles by bacteria. Phyto-purification (or planted filters) is based on three actors: bacteria, they degrade organic particles to make them assimilable by the natural environment, the substrate, made up of gravel or aggregates, is the habitat for bacteria that attach themselves to the surface of each element. It also plays an important role in the rooting of plants. With a granulometry ranging from the finest to the coarsest, the substrate is also a filter that allows water to pass through while blocking the larger elements. The plants, with the development of their roots and the movement of their aerial parts they unclog the filter which, contrary to all other solutions, is self-maintaining. They also stimulate bacterial activity around their roots: the rhizosphere. They play a minor role in water decontamination by absorbing a small proportion of the minerals.
