When the enemy is unconventional, fight unconventionally. In this SOG fixed blade review, I start off with commentary on how conventional, foolish tactics got a lot of American troops killed in our past wars. We were shocked at the brutality and fanatasim of the Japanese Imperial Marines at Tarawa and they taught us some hard won lessons. Showing no adherence to Western conventions, this enemy would use any methodology including phony surrenders, shooting of medics rendering aid, bombing of hospitals, suicide bombings, Bonzai charges, and close quarter sword charges to hew down American troops. Only when we upped our game in battle commitment and equal brutality did we gain the upper hand in the Pacific Island War in WW II. Amazingly many of those lessons against such an enemy were forgotten in Korean and later Vietnam. Conventional forces, hamstrung by ignorant leadership and ridiculous order of battle constraints and limitations, often met with failure and high casualities. US Special Forces had more latitude in the execution of their specialized missions which acted as force multipliers. Their highly dangerous missions needed specialize gear often excelling in the mission of killing. Operating behind enemy lines gathering intel, capturing key leaders, destroying C&C assets, and leader assassinations were carried out by these brave souls. Enter the SOG Agency. Patterned somewhat after the famous Randall Number 1 combat knife, this fighting knife represents the mystique and that uncompromising approach to warfare of those special operations units. And yet without substance it would fade away into obscurity. Like ithe Randall No. 1, the Agency is a dedicated fighting blade. The heft and balance are superb. The AUS8 razor sharp blade is hollow ground, handsomely sculpted (discussed), features excellent reach and penetration, and is lively in hand. Handling the Agency will make you a believer. The black titanium nitride finish on this blade is especially striking and is my preferred finish. The satin SOG Agency is also gorgeous and both make outstanding additions to a tactical blade collection. Fit and finish is excellent but I'd like to see a more perfect excution of the leather to metal fit on the handle; that's about the only detectable downside in the knife. This expoxy impregnated leather-stacked handle is extremely roomy and comfortable in your chosen grip. And while it might lack ultimate water resistance and grip, it is true to the 2nd Kind of Cool and its heritage. The aluminum pommel and flush spanner nut is exquisite and adheres to the SOG pommel finishing. The double quillion guard is near perfect: curved and perfectly spanned to protect your hands. No jimping needed here. The black leather sheath is thematic, conventional, and shows good quality. Stitiching is well done and, like the Randall, it includes a honing stone in a pocket. If put into hard service by a troop, I would seek a Kydex option perhaps at the expense of lineage adherence. With such a sheath upside down carry could be effected. Weight seems less than it is due to the Agency's perfect balance: 10 oz for the blade, 15.6 oz overall. Value on this overseas produced knife is outstanding, about $125 for the Agency Black TiNi version, about $105 US for the satin. The SOG Agency therefore is amazing production blade that upholds the mystique and capabilities of US Special Operations communities that sometimes hunt down and eliminate the enemy is his own backyard, nose to nose, toe to toe...the old fashioned way of winning wars. Though gorgeous in its lines and materials, it remains an effective weapon of close quarter combat, ready to fight the unconventional enemies of freedom. ///////////////Likability Scale: 10 out of 10 (price considered)/////////Music licensed from J.
