Here is a copy of today's handout https://drive.google.com/file/d/1NYOE... 🧭 Purpose of the session The lesson introduces why Reformed/Presbyterian churches practice paedo‑baptism (infant baptism) and contrasts it with the Baptist/credo‑baptism view. The pastor frames the discussion around covenant signs in Scripture and how they function across redemptive history. 🏛️ Covenant signs in Scripture Covenant signs are instituted by God, not chosen by people (e.g., the rainbow in Genesis 9). The sign communicates God’s promise, not primarily the recipient’s testimony. Signs are given to the covenant community, including children and households. ✂️ Circumcision as the Old Covenant sign Circumcision marked Abraham, his descendants, and his entire household as belonging to God. It created a visible distinction between God’s people and the world. It pointed to the inward reality of heart‑circumcision (Deut. 30:6; Rom. 2:28–29). Abraham believed before circumcision, yet all his children and household still received the sign. God considered the sign so important that He sought to kill Moses until his son was circumcised (Ex. 4:24–26). 💧 Baptism as the New Covenant sign Baptism marks entry into the visible church and is commanded by Christ. It signifies the inward work of the Holy Spirit—cleansing, regeneration, new life. Peter declares at Pentecost: “The promise is for you and your children…” (Acts 2:39). Paul calls the children of believers holy (1 Cor. 7:14). There is no New Testament debate about excluding children from the covenant sign, unlike the circumcision debate in Acts 15. 🪜 Continuity between covenants The church is not a replacement for Israel but Israel grown up—one people of God across covenants. Jeremiah 31’s New Covenant promises (law on the heart, forgiveness, Spirit) are fulfilled in Christ. Baptism replaces circumcision as the covenant sign, just as the New Covenant fulfills the Old. 🔍 Reformed vs. Baptistic differences Recipients: Reformed baptize believers and their children; Baptists baptize only professing believers. Mode: Reformed accept pouring/sprinkling; Baptists require immersion. Meaning: Reformed emphasize God speaking His promise; Baptists emphasize the believer declaring faith. In each category, the Reformed view includes what Baptists affirm, but not vice versa.
