Daśa-mūla Verse 3: Sarva-śaktimān – Hari is the possessor of all potencies | parākhyāyāḥ śakter... parākhyāyāḥ śakter apṛthag api sa sve mahimani sthito jīvākhyāṁ svām acid-abhihitāṁ tāṁ tri-padikām svatantrecchaḥ śaktiṁ sakala-viṣaye preraṇa-paro vikārādyaiḥ śūnyaḥ parama-puruṣo ’yaṁ vijayate (3) Although inseparable from the energy known as parā, He is situated in His own glory. His energy also includes what is known as jīva and what is described as acit. Together, this constitutes His energy in three divisions (parā-śakti, jīva-śakti, and māyā-śakti, respectively). He is of independent desire and He directs His energy in all their respective functions. Free from transformations and their effects, this Supreme Person is ever victorious. Line by line and word for word breakdown: Line 1 parākhyāyāḥ śakter apṛthag api sa sve mahimani sthitaḥ • parākhyāyāḥ – of the energy known as parā (the superior energy) • śakteḥ – of the energy (śakti) • apṛthak – not separate, inseparable • api – also, even • saḥ – He • sve – in His own • mahimani – glory, greatness • sthitaḥ – is situated 🔹 Translation: “Although inseparable from the energy known as parā, He is situated in His own glory.” Line 2 jīvākhyāṁ svām acid-abhihitāṁ tāṁ tri-padikām • jīvākhyām – called jīva (the living entity) • svām – His own • acit-abhihitām – described as acit (the unconscious, inert energy) • acit – insentient, unconscious • abhihitām – described as, designated as • tām – that • tri-padikām – threefold, consisting of three categories • tri – three • padikām – divisions, parts 🔹 Translation: “His energy also includes what is known as jīva and what is described as acit. Together, this constitutes His energy in three divisions.” Line 3 svatantrecchaḥ śaktiṁ sakala-viṣaye preraṇa-paraḥ • svatantra-icchaḥ – having independent will • svatantra – independent • icchaḥ – will, desire • śaktim – His energy (śakti, feminine accusative singular) • sakala-viṣaye – in all aspects, in all objects or domains • sakala – all, entire • viṣaye – in the subject, domain, sphere • preraṇa-paraḥ – fully engaged in directing, impelling • preraṇa – inspiration, direction, impulse • paraḥ – supreme, engaged in 🔹 Translation: “He is of independent desire and He directs His energy in all their respective functions.” Line 4 vikārādyaiḥ śūnyaḥ parama-puruṣo ’yaṁ vijayate • vikāra-ādyaiḥ – by transformations and others • vikāra – transformation, modification • ādyaiḥ – beginning with, and others • śūnyaḥ – devoid, free from • parama-puruṣaḥ – the Supreme Person • parama – supreme • puruṣaḥ – person, being • ayam – this (Supreme Person) • vijayate – is ever victorious, triumphs 🔹 Translation: “Free from transformations and their effects, this Supreme Person is ever victorious.”
