Ryan Anderson was the NBA’s Most Improved Player in 2012. He currently ranks in the top 10 for made 3 pointers on the season, behind guys like Steph Curry, James Harden, Kyle Lowry, Klay Thompson, and Isaiah Thomas. His career best for made 3 pointers in a season was 213 in 2012-13, but he’s well on his way to matching those numbers. Just 51 games into the year, he’s already at 142 makes, which is already his third best year by itself. Considering the way the Rockets have been gunning, it will be a total shock if Ryan doesn’t break that 213 mark. Let’s not sugarcoat anything here. Ryan is not the best defender, and he’s got lots of room to grown when it comes to being a playmaker for others, but he can do a few things well: he can bully guys in the post, or exploit slower footed defenders with a spin move or a stepback, he can attack the offensive glass, and he can shoot the leather off of a basketball. His range goes back pretty far out, in fact, I made sure to highlight that he loves taking those WAAAY out wing threes, so it opens up the floor for Eric Gordon and James Harden. With the penetrating and playmaking ability of those two guards, plus the magic that comes from the mind of the maestro, Mike D’Antoni, Houston’s offense can’t help but skyrocket. They currently sit tied with Toronto for the second best offensive rating in the league (per NBA.com), and are first in the league in 3 point attempt rate. So, as with Harden’s do-everything approach, Mike’s finally-fitting-in-with-the-times philosophy, and Ryan’s range, just sit back and enjoy.
