But these regiments are about to get a stark reminder as the weather warms all along the front line of Russia’s wider war on Ukraine, and once-frozen ground turns to mud. The Ukrainians have a name for this muddy season: bezdorizhzhya. This year’s bezdorizhzhya has already begun claiming victims in eastern Ukraine.Recently, Russian troops traveling in a Lada—a kind of compact car—got stuck in the mud just north of Chasiv Yar in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk Oblast. This transport became very easy prey for the FPV drone of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The occupiers in the Pokrovsk area were a little luckier, as they went into battle in "loaves". The combination of mud and drones is damaging logistics forces as much as infantry. In the spring, the occupiers will have to stick to only one supply route - the paved road. Otherwise, their transport will become easy prey for the Ukrainian Armed Forces, especially if it gets stuck in the mud. "The situation in the Pokrovsk area is extremely difficult: logistics are disrupted, and there is a shortage of personnel," said one of the Russian war correspondents. The occupiers should prepare for both problems to get worse as the mud gets deeper and more infantry is killed in civilian vehicles that are prone to getting stuck and then becoming easy prey for the same drones that are blowing up Russian supply trucks. A Donbas fully controlled by Russia would not only give Moscow a strong bargaining chip for any peace negotiations, it would also enable Putin to sell his war at least as a partial success. At present, Russian troops are only a few kilometers from the city limits of Pokrovsk, which is the fourth largest city in the Donbas.
