In this educational video “Learn Shapes Montessori 3 Step Lesson | Shapes Toddler, Preschooler, Kids - Circle, Square, Triangle”, I teach the shapes circle, square and triangle with the successful and time tested Montessori 3 Period Lesson also known as the Montessori 3 Step Lesson. This method of teaching is known as the Montessori 3 period lesson or Montessori 3 step lesson as it was developed by Maria Montessori the founder of the Montessori Method of Teaching. Step 1: IDENTIFICATION - Information placed in short-term memory. Example “This is a circle, this is a square…”. Your preschooler is introduced to and learns to recognize the shapes when they are isolated and named one by one. Step 2: RECOGNITION - Information moves in to long-term memory. After being introduced to the shapes circle, square and triangle your preschooler will enjoy showing that they recognise shapes when called upon to show a named shape, for example “Show me a circle, can you point to a square…”. Step 3: RECOLLECTION Check to see if information moved to long-term memory Now for the last step in the Montessori 3 period lesson. You will ask your preschooler to tell you the names of the individual shapes. Example: “What is this?” TIPS: If you child points out the shape you did not name or says a name incorrectly, do not show disappointment or disapproval, but continue with a new request to check if it was a careless mistake or due to incorrect association of shapes and their names. If it is due to incorrect association then transition smoothly to the previous period in the lesson and repeat the process.
