Discovering and sharing heritage with local schools in July 2022 To celebrate the restoration of our 1889 pipe organ and to share heritage with local people and communities, we delivered a Heritage Dedication Festival in July 2022. The Festival included Heritage Workshops with local schools, a Wind Pipes Exhibition with people of all ages and experiences, a Boer War Memorial talk, a Modern Jive Tea Dance, a formal Dedication Service, project presentation and inaugural recital, a Festival Choral Evensong, Heritage Tours, and a Grand Organ concert. During the Festival, we welcomed over 1,200 visitors to St Mary’s Church. 'Wind Pipes' is an extraordinary sprawling instrument created by artist Sarah Kenchington, originally for Edinburgh Art Festival. In July 2022, The Organ Project hosted the Wind Pipes Exhibition as a feature of their Heritage Dedication Festival (11th - 23rd of July 2022). Students from Portsmouth schools and local community organisations had the opportunity to explore this huge noise-making machine. They also experienced hands-on activities exploring how sound is generated, how The Wireless Organ Project works, alongside instrument-making workshops using recycled materials. For older participants, sessions explored graphic scores, including an arrangement of Spiegel Im Spiegel by Arvo Pärt. Special thanks to Dr William McVicker, Sarah Kenchington and Duncan Chapman, for being fantastic educators... and to Linda Mason, for her wonderful photography and film-making. A huge thank you to The National Lottery Heritage Fund for supporting our project.
