Dudayev was reported killed in a Russian missile attack near Grozny at the weekend. Chechen rebel Vice President Zelimkhan Yandarbiyev was appointed Dudayev's successor at a meeting of rebel leaders on Monday. This is the new President of the breakaway republic of Chechnya Former Deputy President Zelimkhan Yandarbiyev has been chosen to succeed the late General Dudayev following a meeting of the military council in Chechnya. The independent Chechen News Agency C-H-I-A reported the transfer of power was initially opposed by Chechen chieftain Shamil Basayev until it was agreed Yandarbiyev should rule only until elections for a new separatist leader took place. One Chechen source said Yandarbiyev needed to reach an accord with the influential field commander, Aslan Maskhadov to prevent rebel fighters from breaking up into small groups.
