We write English words in shorthand with the help of signs, symbols, strokes and also long/frequently occurring words by a single sign. It saves the space and our precious time. Pitman shorthand is phonetic, words are being written according to their sound. There are 26 consonants in shorthand - p (pee), b (bee), t (tee), d (dee), ch (chay), j (jay), k (kay, G (gay), f (ef), v (vee), th (ith), th (thee), s (ess), z (zee), sh (ish), zh (zhee), m (em), n (en), ng (ing), l (el), R ( two forms- ar, ray), w (way), y (yay), H ( two forms ). The strokes are straight, curved, horizontals. The strokes which are having light sound, we make them light (thin) ie. p, t, ch, k, f, ith, s, sh, m, n, l, r (two forms), w, y, h (two forms) and the strokes having heavy sound, we make them dark (thick) e.g b, d, j, g, v, thee, z, zhee, ing. The length of the stroke should be uniform about one-sixth of an inch. Always practice shorthand with pencil.
