Wherein I learn that if someone throws a sotol at you in a blind tasting you're pretty well screwed. On the other hand, dang but this was a lovely sotol. Stats: Sotol La Higuera, Dasylirion Wheeleri (Aldama, Chihuahua; Lot 11, dated 01/20, 750 bottles; 45.1% ABV) Once again, the challenge from Jose (u/SpicVanDyke) was to identify the type of spirit, the country of origin, and the ABV, and also to answer the question: "This sample is a blend of two varieties that are used in this spirit’s production, what are those two varietals?" I at least got the country right and I got the type half-right; considering sotol has barely been on my radar, I think I did okay-ish! But the thing is, if sotol wasn't on my radar before then it definitely is now. The quality here is seriously high - after another half-hour with this I finally landed on 86/100 - and the price is far more reasonable than I thought, apparently around forty bucks. As my pre-unblinding confusion indicates, there's a fascinating cross-section of flavors going on in this that I think could appeal from mezcal (or even tequila) drinkers to unaged rhum drinkers and maybe even to wheated bourbon fans. Color me impressed. Well done La Higuera, and thanks again to Jose!
