Hungarian POWs Thought British Put Them In Chains — But Were Paid With Cigarettes and Clothes

Yorkshire, England. April 1946. 06:40 hours. The lorry shudders to a halt and the canvas breathes in and out with the rain. Twenty men sway together, quiet as sacks, metal buckles ticking against wood. Through a slit where the tarp has frayed, Corporal László Kovács sees hedgerows like stitching in a green coat, a church spire lifting a wet sky, and no smokestacks anywhere to make the scene behave. For weeks he has carried the same picture in his head—dogs, clubs, a yard where names are read out until you learn not to answer. The picture does not match the doorway that opens now.
