This song is dedicated to my dad, Allen Carstensen, as a birthday surprise! Happy birthday Dad! You make up a huge part of my source of light and love in this world :) This song features an array of talented people who are very special to me: my uncle- the incredible jazz musician Mike Mainieri on vibraphone, my sister Laura Carstensen and my mother Christine Carstensen on harmony vocals, and my dear friend Joe Jakubowski on upright bass, drums, clarinet, and overall production. These days it seems like waking up to gut-wrenching news has become the norm, that feeling of not knowing how to process something so awful, so seemingly avoidable one would think. Innocent lives taken by gun violence, racial hate crimes, women’s rights and LGBTQ rights being threatened at historic levels. This song, written by Bennie Benjamin, Sol Marcus and Eddie Seiler in 1943, was composed and released during World War II, a time of violence, hatred, death, and war. The song was meant as a message of love, hope and peace to those who were struggling, a reminder that light is there during dark times. The lyrics were inspired by the British blackouts in the early 40s- when Nazis would conduct mass air attacks and raids against towns and cities without warning. Many local governments required the covering of windows and doors at night, and the extinguishing of any non-essential light to prevent any glimmer that could potentially aid enemy air craft. Progress is not linear, and history does repeat itself as we know, but change and growth are still apparent in the world we live in. Maybe we can further it if we all strive to be the type of people who are voices of positive change, people who are kind to others- even those we do not necessarily understand or agree with, and people who are grateful for the love, beauty and freedom that surrounds us, even- and especially when- they are harder to see through the tragedy and set backs that occur.
