Dr. Robert Gaynes discusses a Civil War surgical kit from the Special Collections at the Woodruff Health Sciences Center Library at Emory University. The 19th-century kit includes scalpels, bullet extractors, and a hacksaw. Gaynes also talks about early anesthesia, the discovery of antiseptic — too late for the Civil War injured — and the top reason for Civil War deaths: not battlefield fatalities, but post-operative infections, particularly from amputations. Gaynes is a professor of medicine and infectious diseases at Emory University School of Medicine and professor of epidemiology at the Rollins School of Public Health. Calliope’s Cabinet is an exploration of curious innovations through the ages. The project is a collaboration between The Hatchery at Emory University and Emory Libraries.
