A busy weekend for heritage traction in the south-west, as two railtours would grace the region; destined to endure very contrasting fates. Bleak skies would greet Class 45 - 45118 “The Royal Artilleryman” on its successful venture to the region, powering the ‘The Tor Bay & Dart Express’ from Derby to Kingswear and return, under the Inter-City banner for the Locomotive Services group. Its destination on the Dartmouth Steam Railway would provide the perfect opportunity to witness resident 'Manor' Class - 7827 "Lydham Manor" hard at work, operating the DSRs regular timetabled services over its famed gradients. The following day, 'Black 5' - 45212 would lead an ill-fated run of ‘The Royal Duchy’ for The Railway Touring Company, operated by West Coast Railways. On this occasion it would be the Stanier stalwart that faced problems, suffering from an axlebox running hot; a recurring issue for 45212, which would see the locomotive sidelined for repairs following this episode. The ‘Black 5’ would work the tour from Bristol as far as Plymouth, before West Coast Railways Class 47 - 47812 continued the tour to Par, and worked the full return journey. Opening proceedings on the outskirts of Taunton, 45118 appeared in fine fettle as it powered through Bradford-on-Tone on the approach to Whiteball and the beginnings of Wellington Bank. The slower speeds of the Dartmouth Steam Railway allowed a little more time to appreciate the paintwork, as 45118 strode up Goodrington Bank passing Oyster Bridge. A brief coffee break in Dartmouth would be short-lived, with the call of a ‘Manor’ to attend - 7827 would deliver a crescendos performance on Goodrington Bank, skirting the beach on the steep climb to Churston. Moving to Kinsgwear, 7827’s whistle would echo across the marina as it departed the terminus, accelerating well along the waters edge. 45118 would soon follow, departing some 8 minutes early for its journey back to the north; viewed from Britannia Crossing. By the time the tour reached Burlescombe, 45118 was once again well into its stride as it climbed the 1-in-115 gradient at speed. Sunday morning would provide mild conditions as 45212 attacked Wellington Bank at Beambridge, with some assistance from the Class 47; only to be expected with a 5MT against a 1-in-80 gradient. By the time that the Stanier reached Dawlish, conditions had marginally deteriorated with the odd rain drop in the air, and a grey haze meeting 45212 as it curved onto the sea wall.
