Pterygium is a benign growth of the sclera (the white part of the eye) towards the cornea (the clear part of the eye we see through). These growths, although generally not dangerous, can lead to eye dryness, redness, itchiness, grittiness, and a gamut of symptoms that are uncomfortable. In some cases, a pterygium can grow onto the cornea, but this is rare. For many years, ophthalmologists considered this condition untreatable. Even when surgically removed, the recurrence rate of pterygium was about 50%. Using a number of innovative surgical techniques, Dr. Jay Bansal suppresses pterygium recurrence to around 1% recurrence rate. This is done by using conjunctival autografts and amniotic membrane transplantation, as well as removing a good portion of the Tenon's fascia wherefrom the pterygium is believed (by some experts) to derive. In this video, Dr. Bansal details some of the basics about pterygia, including symptoms and surgical expectations (when surgery is deemed necessary).
