The city’s name, derived from the Baganda and Busoga word for “rock,” reflects its unique geography near the Nile. Jinja’s historical significance is tied to the Owen Falls Dam, constructed in 1954, which submerged some of the flat rocks that inspired its name. Jinja was Uganda’s leading industrial town in the 1960s, thanks to its strategic location near Lake Victoria, the Uganda Railway, and the Owen Falls Dam. However, its fortunes declined during the 1970s following the expulsion of Asians by Idi Amin, leading to an economic collapse. Today, Jinja is regaining its former glory with a renewed focus on tourism, agriculture, and industry.
