My Great Great Grandfather, Charlie Mallard (c.1881-1952) In 1941, an expedition party set out for a remote line of cliffs north of the great Murchison River in Western Australia, home of the Beemarra serpent of the Dreaming for us Yamatji ‘Aboriginal’ People of the Nanda tribe. The party was in search of a reported Shipwreck and required the assistance of Charlie to guide them across the hash land and treacherous cliff face to reach the location. Charlie was the first of his name, “Mallard” of the Yamatji ‘Aboriginal’ People. He had a light skin complexion (then referred to as Quarter-caste or Quadroon) and could navigate his way between his People and the walybala (white people) as easily as he could the Land. He led the way to the exact site of the Shipwreck, with those of the expedition being shocked to find that the wreck appeared much older than expected; later confirmed to be that of the Zuytdorp, of the Dutch VOC trading company, which shipwrecked in 1712. Here, is some actual footage from 1941 of Charlie as filmed by the expedition party, which gave much inspiration for my ‘King Charlie’ painting in 2022. In March of 1952, after walking a long distance Charlie laid down to rest under a tree. He placed his hat over his face, as he had always done, and he fell asleep but did not awake. He is now survived by an uncountable number of descendants spread throughout much of WA. Chris D.
