Welcome back to a very white and snowy Prague! Today is Friday, January 9, and the city is buried under a surprising 20 cm of snow. While the local road maintenance services might have hoped it would melt away, I had to dig my way out with a shovel to reach the centre and film this for you! The atmosphere in the city centre is incredible. It’s -1It's, and the sound of fresh snow crunching underfoot is the perfect soundtrack for this winter evening. Lawn areas are separated by low-yew hedges. The garden is completed with several exciting sculptures, fountains, a gazebo, a playground, fruit trees, and herb beds, which harken back to the former owners, the Carmelites and the Franciscans, who once grew herbs and spices here. A small garden by the Church of the Virgin Mary of the Snow, between the squares Václavské náměstí and Jungmannovo náměstí, was initially a much larger medieval garden of the Carmelite Monastery after 1348, within the early development of the New Town (Nové město). Since 1604, it has been the property of the Order of the Discalced Franciscans, who have restored it several times. The garden had a vital utility function with herbal, flower, vegetable beds and fruit trees; the Franciscans grew spices here. When the monastery and the neighbouring church were plundered by the Prague scum and country robber gangs, it was re-established in the 18th century. The central pavilion was renewed with a ceiling decorated with frescoes realised by monk Benedict. It was realised to be a summer refectory in the western wing, and the monastery pharmacy and a well were trenched by the Northern wall. Later on, a decorative fountain was built with statues of the saints. https://goo.gl/maps/eDwtcTrAh7o9WkoA7 Wenceslas Square (Václavské náměstí) This Square is the city's civic and administrative centre, as well as the site of important social and historical events. You'll find inemas, theatres, banks, hotels, restaurants, dozens of small and large shops, and administrative centres here. The Square was created during the founding of the New Town by Charles IV in 1348. Today, it is dominated by the National Museum (1885 – 1891) and Josef Václav Myslbek's depiction of the national patron, St Wenceslas, from 1912. https://goo.gl/maps/R3o7pbj6FeG7QVok6 The Head of Franz Kafka (Hlava Franze Kafky), also known as the Kafka Statue, is an outdoor sculpture by David Černý depicting the Bohemian German-language writer Franz Kafka, installed outside the Quadrio shopping centre in Prague, Czech Republic.
