As you may have heard, OPRFHS has begun to discuss replacing some of its physical education spaces. Originally built in 1928 and 1957, when boys and girls weren’t allowed to take P.E. together, these facilities are in poor condition and simply don’t accommodate the way P.E. is taught in the 21st century. At a recent board meeting, physical education teacher Linda Carlson described how the P.E. curriculum has evolved over her 27 years at OPRFHS, and why new P.E. learning spaces are so vital. Long gone are the days of square dancing and dodgeball! Today’s P.E. classes teach mental health and wellness, yoga and mindfulness, global dance, self-defense, healthy relationships and consent, adventure sports (kayaking, rock climbing, and more), sports medicine, nutrition, strength training, swimming, and more. Ms. Carlson was the named National P.E. Teacher of the Year in 2017. Watch her passionate presentation to the Board, and you’ll see why.
