(11 Jan 2007) HEADLINE: U.S. official: Warplanes miss target in Somalia CAPTION: A top U.S. official in Africa says that none of the al-Qaida suspects believed to be hiding in Somalia died in a U.S. airstrike this week, but Somalis with close ties to the terrorist group were killed. (Jan. 11) [Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] [Notes:planes taking off from US ship] A U-S official in Africa says an airstrike by American warplanes in Somalia failed to kill a top al-Qaida leader. [Notes:file attack] U-S forces are trying to target three al-Qaida members who allegedly planned the 1998 bombings of U-S embassies in Tanzania and Kenya. [Notes:still of fazul] Wednesday a Somali official had said that Fazul Abdullah Mohammed, who is one of the F-B-I's most wanted terror suspects, had been killed by a U-S air attack earlier in the week. However, a U-S official says that Mohammed and two others were not killed and added that Ethopian troops along with special forces from the U-S are still pursuing the three suspects. [Notes:shots being fired] The official does say though, eight to ten people were killed in the air strike. He says most of them were Somalis and had close ties to al-Qaida [Notes:plane flying overhead troops on ground] Officials say U-S forces entered Somalia with Ethiopian forces late last month when Ethiopians launched their attack against a Somali Islamic movement said to be sheltering al-Qaida figures. [Notes:ships at sea] In addition to the special forces on the ground, the U-S has moved additional forces into waters off the Somali coast, where they have conducted security missions, monitored maritime traffic and intercepted suspicious ships.
