Spartan Sprint SoCal at Castaic Lake in Santa Clarita, CA (December 2022). Let me first start off by saying, it ALMOST NEVER rains in Southern California lol. What are the chances this race happened on one of the very few weekends with rain??? This is the first ever Spartan OCR I have done in the rain. Thankfully it was not a torrential downpour, it was just lightly sprinkling at the beginning of the race. As we progressed along the trail, it started to develop into light rain. Thankfully for us, we completed the race before it rained harder and got colder. For training, I couldn't physically do much before this race. I was actually suffering from a knee issue two weeks prior to this (due to the Spartan Beast I did in late November). Therefore, it was painful for me to run. Luckily for me, I had a very supportive and amazing group with me who were down to walk and lightly jog with me! As expected with rain, the obstacles were 100x harder than they normally would have been. This applies to almost everything! The rings and monkey bars were slick and had no grip. The sand bag carry downhill was muddy and slippery which increased chances of injuries/falls/slips. The Z wall footholds were slippery and shoes were stuck in the rolling mud portion... Overall, it was a mess. BUT IT WAS STILL A FUN MESS!!! This time around, I went with friends who never completed any Spartan OCRs or OCRs in general before. We all had a good time (or maybe that's just what I'd like to believe HAHA). Obstacle course races are quite different than normal 5k, 10k, etc. races. You think the distance is only so little, but the obstacles are so taxing on the body sometimes. It's quite deceiving. Even after having done the Spartan Beast (half marathon OCR), you would think this would be a breeze for me, but I still almost cramped at the end of this 5k race. Anything can happen and every race is a different experience. DON'T feel discouraged if you finish a race and it wasn't what you wanted to be like. Some days just aren't our days! At least you finished the race! If you didn't finish the race, well you at least started it and that's a BIG step! (Now if you didn't even start it, well at least you're thinking about it and that means you're headed in a great direction!) I think sometimes we forget to celebrate the small wins and have fun. We're so focused on wanting to complete obstacles or complete races that we forget to enjoy them. ENJOY THE RACE! You didn't pay all that money just to suffer. Create good memories and run the race with friends. Help one another and, if you want, help a stranger too! One of the best things about Spartan races is the community! I've gotten physical help on the races from strangers when they saw me struggling and I didn't even have to ask. I've gotten supportive talks from fellow racers during the trails too. In turn, I've provided energy gels and support to other racers myself. Be kind to one another and have a great time. You've worked hard for this, you got this! Please like and subscribe to my channel to see more. I don't know how many more Spartan races I'll do in the future, but I'll be sure to post them up if I continue! Also, I mentioned this previously, but I'll really try to work on posting up some of the workouts I've done to train for these races.
