Veteran vocalist/entertainer Shirley Bassey performs a great cover from one of the best songwriters entertainers in the industry, Neil Sedaka. The song 'Solitaire' is performed with the powerfully dramatic Bassey style she is so well known for. This performance is from a 1982 TV Special, A Special Lady ABOUT the LP, All By Myself: All by Myself is a 1982 album by Shirley Bassey. Having ended her contract with United Artists around 1980 (around the time that label was sold to Bassey's former home EMI), Bassey took a break from recording, and then began releasing albums on various labels. All by Myself was the first of these, issued on the Applause label. 1982 was the dawn of the CD era, and this was her first-ever album to be issued on CD. The album was also issued on LP and cassette. In the UK and some other countries, the album was titled Love Songs, with identical cover art, and under that name it charted for five weeks on the UK albums chart, on the K-tel label, peaking at #48. The original CD has since become scarce, though the songs have appeared on many compilations. LYRICS - New York State Of Mind: Some folks like to get away Take a holiday from the neighbourhood Hop a flight to Miami Beach Or to Hollywood But I'm taking a Greyhound On the Hudson River Line I'm in a New York state of mind I've seen all the movie stars In their fancy cars and their limousines Been high in the Rockies under the evergreens But I know what I'm needing And I don't want to waste more time I'm in a New York state of mind It was so easy living day by day Out of touch with the rhythm and blues But now I need a little give and take The New York Times, The Daily News It comes down to reality And it's fine with me 'cause I've let it slide Don't care if it's Chinatown or on Riverside I don't have any reasons I've left them all behind I'm in a New York state of mind It was so easy living day by day Out of touch with the rhythm and blues But now I need a little give and take The New York Times, The Daily News It comes down to reality And it's fine with me 'cause I've let it slide Don't care if it's Chinatown or on Riverside I don't have any reasons I've left them all behind I'm in a New York state of mind I'm just taking a Greyhound on the Hudson River Line 'Cause I'm in a New York state of mind LYRICS - Solitaire: There was a man A lonely man Who lost his love Through his indifference A heart that cared That went unshared Until it died Within his silence And Solitaire 's the only game in town And every road that takes him Takes him down And by himself it's easy to pretend He'll never love again And keeping to himself he plays the game Without a (her??) love It always ends the same While life goes on around him everywhere He's playing Solitaire A little hope Goes up in smoke Just how it goes Goes without saying There was a man A lonely man Who would command The hand he's playing And Solitaire 's the only game in town And every road that takes him Takes him down And by himself it's easy to pretend He'll never love again And keeping to himself he plays the game Without a (her??) love It always ends the same While life goes on around him everywhere He's playing Solitaire Solitaire 's the only game in town And every road that takes him Takes him down While life goes on around him everywhere He's playing Solitaire
