Mark Dimond Brujeria AllMusic Review by John Bush An associate of Willie Colón's late-'60s band who also shepherded Héctor Lavoe's early solo career, Mark Dimond was a splendid pianist with a deft touch, as well as an excellent arranger. His first LP of the '70s appeared on the Vaya label thanks to help from Larry Harlow and Johnny Pacheco. Although it was something of a one-shot (only one other album appeared under his name), it's one of the more interesting salsa records of the classic era. Dimond's piano playing was in similar company to Eddie Palmieri, playful and elegant, but Brujeria allows him a lot of soloing space. Ismael Quintana and Justo Betancourt lend their vocal weight to the coro, while Angél Canales provides lead vocals (the LP was at one point even reissued under his name). If it had been released under Willie Colón's or Larry Harlow's name, Brujeria might not have the esteem that many salsa fans give it, but it's still a strong statement from a group that should've recorded more. One of 5 starsOne of 1970s Salsa's most revered cult favorites. By Justo Roteta on December 31, 2011 The late and great yet criminally underrated Afro-American Salsa pianist Mark "Markolino" Dimond was incredibly talented musician and arranger who was way ahead of his time and who was always viewed as a "musician's musician" by many of his colleagues. This classic 1971 release was first issued on Vaya Records in 1971 and was produced by Harvey Averne and Larry Harlow. All seven songs were written by Dimond himself and are performed in the classic Cuban Son Montuno style which allowed Dimond to take some very fiery and dynamic piano solos on most of them. Although this album was not a major commercial success when first issued , this album has always been revered by serious fans of 1970s Salsa and even Larry Harlow himself has always held it in extremely high regard--the fact that it HAS been reissued in several configurations throughout the years bears witness to its relevance. It's also worth noting that this was the album which launched the sonero Angel Canales to stardom (so much so, in fact, that it was reissued as "Mas Sabor" by Angel Canales" in 1977 on Alegre Records). In any event, alcoholism and drug addiction-related problems prevented Dimond from becoming the superstar he should have been as he was fired from both Willie Colon's band and from Sabor because of his unpredictability and other problems which his addictions brought about. "Mi Irmita", "Tiene Sabor", "Mariquita", and the extremely dark and suspenseful "Yo No Tengo Pena" and the hit title track make this one a definite keeper. When I listen to an album of this one's calibre, I can't help but wish they were making music like this today. Enjoy!
